We are going to be hiring part-time Earn-a-bike instructors for this summer. Does anyone have a good example job posting? Does anyone have a list of things to look for and things to avoid?
Sincerely,
Jonathan Morrison Project Coordinator Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective 2312 S. West Temple Salt Lake City, UT 84115 w: 801-328-2453 c: 801-688-0183 f: 801-466-3856 www.slcbikecollective.org
here's the agreement i came up with for our teen program for the summer, but it's not really playing out exactly as i had planned. some of this may be useful to you, though:
Sopo Bicycle Cooperative Teen Night Mentor Job Description and Agreement
The Teen Night Mentor will supervise 15 teens (ages 14 - 19) for three hours per week for eight weeks, beginning on June 6, 2007, and ending August 1, 2007 (skipping July 4, 2007). The Mentor will also be responsible for Teen Night preparation, clean up, and planning. The total number of work hours per week is 5. The Mentor will be compensated $15 per hour.
The Mentor will use the following schedule for each Teen Night session:
6:00 pm - 6:30 pm
Sign in, eat dinner, and settle down. Food will not be served after 7:15 pm to encourage punctuality and responsibility, and also to maintain the predetermined schedule.
6:30 pm - 6:45 pm
Clean up and group team-building activity. Team-building activity is necessary for airing personal and social tension that tends to build among teens, and it also promotes learning and valuing cooperation.
6:45 pm - 7:45 pm
First four weeks: Directed bicycle maintenance activity, such as tube patching, cable adjusting, and frame stripping. Second four weeks: Directed group project to be determined by teens, such as developing bicycle rental and/or repair business, building a pedal powered blender or other machine, or developing a bicycle oriented service project.
7:45 pm - 8:45 pm
Personal projects (teens can work on a project of their choice).
8:45 pm - 9:00 pm
Clean up and sign out.
The first session of teen night will be considered "orientation."
The Mentor will be responsible for ensuring the accountability of the teens:
*All participating teens must bring signed permission slips. *Each teen may keep the first bike he or she builds. Each additional bicycle will cost the teen $25 or equivalent sweat equity hours. *All participating teens must be on time. No exceptions after 6:15 pm. *All participating teens must abide by shop rules. The Mentor and teens may develop additional teen night rules.
The Mentor may ask disruptive teens to leave.
The Mentor will use a point system with incentives to encourage good behavior. If the teens accumulate enough points, they will be rewarded with a bicycle race.
The Mentor will have access to discretionary funds with which to purchase teaching supplies.
The Mentor will fill out an evaluation form after each session and give it to the Project Coordinator. This will be used to produce reports for project sponsors and potential future sponsors.
The Project Coordinator will *Ensure that there is adequate volunteer support for the Mentor. *Provide teaching curriculum. *Assist the Mentor in development of team building exercises. *Provide any additional support requested by the Mentor.
