Paypal automatically converted the currency and when I compared the amount received to the expense/income spreadsheet it seemed that it was all accounted for. If you send it via the 'family/friend' option it usually doesn't charge a transaction fee.. I think you'd only potentially face fees when transferring to a bank account, which is why I recommended we only transfer the funding for BB in Detroit as needed.

+1, since we currently use PayPal on the site it's probably a decent option. I considered ditching PP on the site after the news that came out about Thiel but then realized that he's no longer associated with the company, I've not been able to find any good reasons not to use it.

Heather, do you have any idea if funds were lost when passed from GDL to Detroit? Was there a translation or currency conversion fee?

Hey Everyone,

When we received the funds from GDL we used paypal. There seem to be a number of reasons to divest from Paypal/not use it, but that probably isn't a conversation to be had in this venue. If you do decide to go with a check or can't use paypal-- I would recommend a cashiers/bankers check and I would mail it certified/first class because it is a large enough sum of money. The issues there are: you have to declare the value and might have to pay taxes on it because of the sum and my other concern would be if they are able to cash it/convert the currency.

Is there a safe way to send a large check in the mail like that? Are there any other suggestions besides transferring the money through Godwin's accounts?

Let me know if I can help as well, I have bank accounts in Canada and the US and send money in between regularly. Depending on the cost of a wire transfer it may be cheaper to send it through me instead.

Hi Zach,

Thanks for the reply.  If your bank doesn't do international money transfers, could a simple solution be just to write us a cheque and mail it?  Let me know what's easiest on your end and if we can do anything on ours to facilitate!

Thanks!
Benita

Hi Benita,

Meg and I have a bunch of money for you but the others have experience with the transfer process. I know our bank has stopped doing international money transfers.

Hi folks,

Hope you've all had a chance to recover well from Bike!Bike! and are settling into the usual busyness that is life in community bike shops!

We're slowly getting things organized on our end for next year's B!B!, and are starting to sort some things, including getting leftover funds from you.  I am on the finance committee and have been tasked with figuring out how to do this with you.  I can discuss all of the details in this group email format, or if it makes more sense to figure this out with one or two of you about this, please let me know who you are!

Thanks!
Benita
