Kickstand Community Bikes in Vancouver, BC (all volunteer run with support of one paid coordinator) moved to a slack-based messaging system for our volunteers a couple years ago. It's been great for increasing discussions and streamlining conversations. It's great to have different "channels" that one can tune into -- e.g.,  a channel for teaching tools, a channel for shop organization, a channel for anti-oppression work -- based on what folks are interested in. And we've had a lot fewer complaints about 'too many emails'!

For what it's worth, I rarely respond to these emails because I feel if however many hundred folks are going to read my email, it'd better be worth it.  I'd enjoy participating in a Discord server for bike co-ops!

I love this perspective! Thanks Ron. And I agree with Jean-François.

Luke, in terms of networking, for me the primary reason to concentrate
activity in the email domain is that there is a long-term and complete
record of the discussions, always publicly available and easily
searchable. We can always refer back to it.

I acknowledge that email isn't where most of the younger generations
reside, and that it's important to meet people where they are, but
ephemeral dialogue just isn't appropriate for resource creation and
maintenance.

Short-term comms might work well for brainstorming, but without memory,
you run a high risk of reinventing the wheel, wasting resources, and
alienating people from knowledge. These days I consult the archives
before broaching what I think is a new topic. And even before I was a
part of this list, I used to consult the archives, and so when I signed
up I already knew a lot about who people in the community were and what
the scene was like. It made it easier to participate once I did sign up.

We're talking to both the future and the present here, not only the
latter.
