hi Ainsley and others, We will be caravaning by bike on the Erie canal trail from the cap region of NY (Albany/Troy) to Toronto via Buffalo, and would love to hear about recommended bike routes beyond there.
i know greyhound is really annoying about having to pack your bike in a box, where as Chinatown buses are very relaxed about it... anyone know how Megabus handles bikes?

Flying to Buffalo and then taking another form of transit to Toronto will be the best and cheapest way, if you have to take a plane. This is what we did to get to San Fransisco last year! If you do fly into toronto, Pearson International Airport is the largest one and serves all major airlines. It is accessible by transit (a bus takes you directly to the end of the subway line which then takes you into the city), or if you want you could put your bike together and bike in from there - though you have to cross some highway, so it may not be for the faint of heart. We can get the best recommended cycling route for anyone interested in doing that.
Toronto Island Airport is right in the harbour on Lake Ontario. They are only serviced by Porter Airlines (http://www.flyporter.com), who fly to a few major cities including Boston, Chicago and New York. They sometimes have competitive rates, and are very accessible to the core of the city.
