One way that I am working on for our biodiesel cooperative (www.greenguildbiodiesel.org) is to establish an umbrella nonprofit in which the coop is a program.  We are currently putting together our 501c3 application, but I have spoken with a lawyer who focuses on coops and nonprofits.  Its possible to have a coop that is a nonprofit but there are quite a few potential conflicts of interest that need to be addressed beforehand.
