Bike Farm has 2 lists both hosted by google
- a general volunteer mailing list that's open for anyone to join
- an announcement-only list for the general public
At our last meeting we voted to create a third list for general chatter to keep our volunteer list manageable for folks who don't check email that often.
I'm experimenting with using http://swaggle.mobi to contact people to cover shifts and to send reminders about meetings because some of our volunteers to read email.

We use a mailman mailing list... well three mailman mailing lists.
we also do this, except it's:
- one open discussion list for the core collective, with 19 subscribers,
restricted subscription to active members or, at the very least, people who have been.
- one open discussion list for all volunteers, with 47 subscribers. you get
added on when you take a volunteer orientation.
- one announcements-about-the-shop-only list that anyone can join, with 242
subscribers. at most two emails a month go out on this, usually just one.
http://lists.bike-dump.ca is the server in question.
works pretty well.
