Plus, most of the stuff our volunteers buy isn't something that most of our LBSs have in stock, and our hearts don't bleed much for taking business away from the online warehouses.

I was surprised at some of the discounts offered to volunteers.  We always do what we can to reward our more active volunteers but I try to avoid the risk of taking business away from retail shops.  If someone volunteers for 20 hours and you sell them something at cost that should be $400, you have paid them $10 an hour in a round about sort of way.
