Executive Director

The Community Bicycle Center (CBC) is a nonprofit organization that provides youth enrichment opportunities

for personal growth through bicycling-related activities to youth from Biddeford Maine and surrounding

communities. The CBC has provided high-quality programs for eleven years and is highly effective at engaging

kids, providing positive experiences and developing important life skills. We are seeking an experienced

Executive Director with exceptional interpersonal and youth development skills, strong financial, operational

and managerial expertise along with the experience and expertise to build strong community relationships.

Our founding Executive Director grew the CBC from a single volunteer-run program to an organization with

three full-time staff and one part-time youth staff, over 100 volunteers and a full range of programming. The

new Executive Director will be the organization’s primary spokesperson, ensuring that youth at the CBC learn

and develop positive life skills such as caring, effort, flexibility, relationships, perseverance, problem-solving,

organization and responsibility. Youth learn and develop life skills in order to be successful in relationships,

educational pursuits, future employment, health and civic engagement by receiving direct time and attention

Job Description: Executive Director

Community Bicycle Center | Biddeford, Maine

The Executive Director’s primary role is to provide leadership, sustainability and management of Community

Bicycle Center's (CBC) youth development mission. The Executive Director will see the CBC to its next stage of

growth. The Executive Director’s responsibilities include oversight of direct service programs, resource

development (fundraising), public relations, facilities management, volunteer management and general

administrative and capacity building operations. Additional areas of responsibility include implementing the

strategic plan, evaluating and enhancing the organization, administering organizational policies and

procedures, supervising staff, developing human resource functions and managing the budget. The Executive

Director position is full-time exempt, hired by and directly accountable to the Board of Directors through its

elected Board President.

Essential Responsibilities

1. Management and Administration

a. Serves as the primary organization planner- setting goals and objectives consistent with the mission,

vision and strategic plan of the CBC.

b. Develops projections of needs and funding.

c. Develops and administers operational policies and procedures.

d. Oversees all programs, services and activities to ensure the CBC is meeting program objectives.

e. Leads all business and organizational development and capacity-building efforts.

f. Ensures compliance with funding sources and regulatory requirements.

g. Provides information for evaluation of the organizational activities.

2. Financial Management

a. Develops, recommends and monitors annual, project and capital budgets.

b. Ensures effective audit trails through financial policies and procedures.

c. Approves expenditures in relationship to Board approved budgets.

d. Provides for sound fiscal record-keeping and reporting.

e. Submits monthly financial statements to the Board Treasurer.

f. Reviews and approves grant applications and funding proposals.

g. Actively participates in developing and stewarding donor relationships.

3. Public Relations and Marketing

a. Serves as chief liaison with the public and local community, various governmental entities and

community organizations.

b. Ensures appropriate representation of CBC by all employees and volunteers.

4. Personnel Administration

a. Administers Board approved personnel policies and procedures.

b. Ensures ethical and legal hiring, supervision and termination procedures.

c. Oversees any and all disciplinary actions.

d. Provides supervision and evaluation of staff.

e. Assists staff in developing and executing professional development plans.

f. Manages all human resource functions including annual reviews and staff capacity planning.

5. Board of Directors Relations

a. Assists the Board President in planning the agenda and materials for board meetings.

b. Initiates and assists in developing policy recommendations and in setting priorities.

c. Identifies board skills matrix gaps and recruits board members accordingly to maximize board

effectiveness in conjunction with Governance Committee.

d. Works with the Development Director and Board to raise funds necessary to grow the CBC.

e. Assists with recruiting members for standing and ad hoc committees.

6. Risk Management

a. Oversees risk management analysis and procedures for direct service programs, financial health,

volunteer and personnel management and community relations.

7. Facilities Management (in coordination with volunteer Facilities Committee)

a. Ensures the CBC facility is maintained and repaired as necessary.

b. Hires independent contractors to make necessary repairs or improvements.

c. Prepares capital investment and repair budgets for Board approval.

Physical Demands/Hazards

The position requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, cycling (20 miles), pushing, and pulling. The

employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 or more

pounds.

Additional Skills, Knowledge and Experience

1. Create and maintain a cultural environment of belonging, power, freedom and fun within all people and

groups that intersect with the CBC mission.

2. Demonstrate experience leading adolescent youth development initiatives.

3. Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheets and donor management software.

4. Skilled at organizational concepts including coaching, interpersonal relationships and conflict resolution.

5. Outstanding oral and written communication, including storytelling.

6. Ability to manage critical path timelines and multiple projects while maintaining attention to details.

7. Standard First Aid and CPR certification.

Education and Experience

A Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, business management, social work, communications,

education, marketing or equivalent experience is required. Master’s degree is preferred. A minimum of five

years of experience in nonprofit or business leadership and management roles with demonstrated success in

securing gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations.
