Subject: [TheThinkTank] Bike Storage Optimization
Hi. I am a member of The Bike Connector, an earn-a-bike and bike collective program in Lowell, Massachusetts, USA. We recently gained access to container (12m L x 2.3m W x 2.26m H; 40' L x 7.6' W x 7.4' H) to help manage our inventory of bikes and parts. I want to maximize the capacity of the container, while allowing for easy access to the bikes. I'm sure others have solved this optimization problem.
Any suggestions for how to organize this space?

Hello!
We have 14 of these containers for our programs and we have found a way to maximize space for very cheap.
I can send you photos of exactly how to set stuff up too- talking briefly will probably help too
Very exciting!

Daniel,
This is amazing! What a great service you provide to the community. Currently, our workshop is located in a school, which is closed due to the coronavirus. My hope was to move the workshop and storage into the container. I played the video. It was a nice overview. Do you have images of the inside layout?

Here's some not-great images of the way we maximize storage for bikes.
Basically, vertically, using a hook on the wall for the front wheel. It
helps to have some kind of cradles for the wheels/tires to fit into, but
you don't have to.
It's best to stagger them (as in the outdoor picture), one up, the next
down, the next up, and so on. The spacing is about 11" vertically
between the lower bike and the higher one, and 12" horizontally, bike to
bike. This spacing and staggering should give enough room for the
handlebars not to tangle too much and the cranks not to either.

I built a hybrid storage/workshop one out on the cheap for my community. Sold it for more than we paid!
That's electrical conduit as the rack "rail". Major issue - only half the population has the upper body strength to lift their bicycle and hang it daily. Bikes on the left all the way down and a walking area on the right worked out for some.

Hi Robert,
Thank you for organizing this. I would love to attend.

Health and Wellness Coordinator
Northern Berkshire Community Coalition
61 Main St. Suite 218
North Adams, MA 01247
413-663-7588 Ext. 16
www.nbccoalition.org
I wanted to invite the bike collective community to a collaborative online workshop to make a bit more sense of operating safely & effectively both in the short and long terms, volunteer management, and shop's capacity for providing services.
Day: Friday June 12
Time: 3pm Central Time
This will be a three-part structured workshop where participants will be paired up with each other and begin to chart the trends they are seeing. We will then look at these as a group. The second part will be working together in small groups to sort out what services you feel are critical to address, the activities to make them happen, and what the cultural aspects for each will be. The final part will be individual or by shop, by focusing on who it is you are serving, what you are offering them, the opportunities there, and the risks involved.
I realize that some shops have already figured this stuff out, but I know there are several that are still struggling with it. This is to help them. It would be great to have participants who can share how they have worked things out.
It is a 45 minute long workshop. We will be using Zoom for meeting together and Freehand by Invision to collaborate. I built this workshop in grad school and this is the first time doing it digitally. I plan to record it so I can see what works and what doesn't. Please go easy me :p
Email me directly if you are interested and I will send you the invites.

Yes, it is. But I can't remember the location. You'll just need to search for "thinktank" "archives" online.
It really should be posted wherever the signup page is.
