Recycle Ithaca's Bicycles has been a program of the Ithaca Southside Community Center for around 20 years. The mission of ScCC is "to affirm, empower, and foster the development of self pride among the African-American citizens of greater Ithaca". We also tend to intersect with our local Food Not Bombs and other bike advocacy organizations. A lot of our participants are in the decarceration/reentry process and we also give assistance to Ithaca Welcomes Refugees in the form of bike donations to newly arrived immigrants.
We do try to focus on our core mission, however. For us, it's important to see that we are most valuable to the community when we are excellent at what we do. We wouldn't have anything tangible to offer IWR, for instance, if we weren't robust enough to produce (and forfeit the profit from) functional bikes in quantity whenever needed.

Here's a wild hair of a question, perhaps: Do any of you operate in conjunction with another effort/cause/concept? Our neighborhood is a food desert as of March 2017, a historically diverse neighborhood, and an urban neighborhood on the brink of a whole lotta development. Many of us want it to remain truly diverse and make it an equitable, affordable place to live, and many of us are involved in multiple efforts (community gardens, food desert issues, local school support, broad historical research, etc.).
Are any of you combining your efforts along with the bicycle part of things? Thanks!
