Subject: Re: [TheThinkTank] Dividing Paid vs Volunteer LaborWe pay professional (In the Trade) mechanics, musicians and sometimes photographers.Hi JoshWe are right in the middle of this process ourselves. Your pain is our pain, it seems. My friend says "paid labour does what needs to be done, and volunteer labour won't do". We would add policy and procedures to your initial list.I've attached a wack of collected job descriptions, courtesy of this very list.CheersDennisThe Bike Shed, Melbourne AustraliaOn Wed, Sep 25, 2019 at 2:41 AM Josh Bisker <jbisker@gmail.com> wrote:Hi pals,____________________________________The Mechanical Gardens has been essentially an all-volunteer effort so far, but we're exploring adding some paid positions to reach real organizational sustainability. Things like fundraising, fostering organizational partnerships, and even just coordinating operations and volunteers are challenging to do with no paid staff time. It's obviously tricky to make this shift though. One thing we need to do is comfortably distinguish: (a) the types of work for which people are paid, versus (b) the types of work for which people volunteer. So: in your organization, what are some of the ways you divide these things up? A related question might be: What are your titles and job descriptions for your paid positions?I know this topic opens a whole can of worms, but maybe we can get into it a couple of questions at a time...

Subject: Re: [TheThinkTank] Repair checklistsBike Pirates has been using this Bike Build Sheet for many years (after stealing something similar from Recycle-Cycles in Ottawa...)I have a modified version I use for Build-A-Bike at Charlie's FreeWheels which has slightly different content since we build bikes through programs, and don't sell them :)We don't have step-by-step checklists for anything other than bike building.Ainsley (Toronto)On Tue, Sep 24, 2019 at 11:00 PM Scott Long <scott.m.long@gmail.com> wrote:This is the one we use at our shop. 2 sided.____________________________________On Tue, Sep 24, 2019 at 9:44 PM Dennis Wollersheim <dewoller@gmail.com> wrote:____________________________________HI AllOne of our vollies is putting together repair checklists for use by volunteers and repairing public. Subject: Re: [TheThinkTank] Repair checklistsBike Walk Wichita went to this 2-sided checklist, as many of our volunteers are not strong printer readers. One side is the typical text list, the other has much the same content but in a more graphical way. We encourage folks to use the more detailed side, but the picture side removes the barrier, intimidation of a page full of tiny text.Jack MurphyOn Tue, Sep 24, 2019 at 8:44 PM Dennis Wollersheim <dewoller@gmail.com> wrote:____________________________________HI AllOne of our vollies is putting together repair checklists for use by volunteers and repairing public. Subject: Re: [TheThinkTank] Dividing Paid vs Volunteer LaborWe got a small grant that allowed us to pay a volunteer coordinator 15 hrs/week. That position (me) has allowed us to improve the backbone of the organization, as I do a lot of behind the scenes work including managing data, website, operations, etc. After the year the grant paid for we continue to pay out of general funds. We recently got another grant to hire a part time shop lead, that's allowed us to pursue outreach to different groups, as well as open Friday afternoons.Jack MurphyBike Walk WichitaOn Sep 24, 2019, at 11:41 AM, Josh Bisker <jbisker@gmail.com> wrote:Hi pals,The Mechanical Gardens has been essentially an all-volunteer effort so far, but we're exploring adding some paid positions to reach real organizational sustainability.
