We use a mailman mailing list... well three mailman mailing lists.

we also do this, except it's:

• one open discussion list for the core collective, with 19 subscribers,

restricted subscription to active members or, at the very least, people who have been.

• one open discussion list for all volunteers, with 47 subscribers. you

get added on when you take a volunteer orientation.

• one announcements-about-the-shop-only list that anyone can join, with

242 subscribers. at most two emails a month go out on this, usually just one.

http://lists.bike-dump.ca is the server in question.

works pretty well.
