Hi all,

In Santa Barbara, our EAB programs consist of 18 hours of instruction taught by a certified League Cycling Instructor and a TA.
They are offered in different schools as an after-school program to 12-16 yo students (1h30 twice a week for 6 weeks).
We teach basic bike mechanics (fix a flat, adjust brakes, derailleur) and we follow the curriculum from the League of American Bicyclists for teaching riding skills (it was previously called Kids 2: it is basically Traffic Skills 101 adapted for youth).
The first 2/3 weeks, depending on the group, are spent on the blacktop where students practice handling skills, review the rules of the road and become better riders. The last 2/3 weeks, we take the group on the streets.

Here is a link to an article that I recently wrote about the success of our EAB programs (called Pedal Power)

Hey All,
Our EAB program is almost 7 years old.  Over the years we've gotten pretty good at teaching bike mechanics to our EABers but we fall short when it comes to teaching riding skills.  One of my goals for this year is to institute a riding component to the program.

Are any of you teaching riding skills as part of your EAB or Build a Bike programs?  If so we'd love to hear how you do it.

Ride On!
