Hey friends,
This saddens me and my condolences to family and friends.

Because of the pandemic and my partner's health conditions I'm unable to physically facilitate any action on this work.
Currently still distancing/isolating especially in light of our local community experiencing a recent upswing of infections.
However if any needs are to be met remotely, I'm keen to help.
Sunny, Lauren, thanks for reaching out, but I haven't been part of OCB since March.

So sad... Such a reminder that we put our lives at such a risk on the road in a world run by cars. 😥

Thank you all for your answers. To clarify: she was from Montreal and starting a bike trip across the country. I’m therefore trying to organize a ceremony from Montreal with no contacts locally. I do know how to set up ghost bikes as I’m also the organizer of those ceremonies when cyclists are killed here.

Lauren: I’d love the contact information for Jesse. Have you got their email?

Hi Gabrielle,

I'm so sorry to hear this.  Jesse at Our Community Bikes would likely be a good resource.  I believe the idea it that friends and loved ones take the initiative to find, paint, and dedicate the bike, and contact the municipality to inform them of your intent and troubleshoot any possible safety issues with placement.  Likely any community bike shop will have a bike you can have for this purpose if you do not wish/are unable to use her bike (everyone is different about what feels appropriate).  Sending you much tenderness.

With condolences,
Lauren

So sorry to read this sad news.  OCBC has painted many ghost bikes, several for Sylvia Bingham, whose parents are a real inspiration for how to deal with deep sadness most proactively.

Take your time, and use good paint, and several coats.  Glossy is nice.  A rushed sloppy job looks like a bike stolen by clueless kids. Choose a non-cloth seat that will take paint well.

Take the pedals off, or the chain, and probably lock it (as inconspicuously as possible) or it will get stolen eventually.  We replace Sylvia's ghost bike each year before the anniversary of her death, when her parents come to town and organize a ride to the site.

Lay the bike on one side, let dry, then do the other.  There will be lots of overspray.  I have painted the bike in the street near the site, which made a reverse-image bike on the roadway, perhaps a bit too scary.

My condolences to your friends,
Jim

Hello,

My boyfriend's best friend was just killed as she was starting a bike trip across the country.

I'd like to get in touch with people who could help in setting up a ghost bike for her.

Thank you in advance <3
