I have stayed in or near Oakland & Bart'ed into SF w/ my bike many times, including SFCM 15th Anniverary, last year.  Looking forward to 16!

Does anyone know of a bike rental shop in SF?

I use them in NY & DC.  No hassles. 

Maybe you don't need to pack/pay/ship/damage? your personal bike.
