Many a Torontonian surface-routes it to Buffalo and flies from there. Options include bus (no monopoly so shop around!), train (again both American and Canadian options so you can shop around), car (if you're a group of six, say) or bike. 
We do it because it avoids customs airport chaos when people try to mess with airline schedules, for one thing. There is also a fairly significant airport fee at Pearson (the large airport).
As for geography there's the escarpment but if you've got a selection of gears you'll be fine.

Bike!  You could bring your bike and bike from Buffalo to Toronto!  It
would be awesome.

Cost of bringing a bike + food for the ride = probably cheaper than
flying into Toronto and way more fun.
