Wordpress is certainly an easier option to get set up initially, but if it turns out that I'm doing this alone I'll probably chose Drupal since I'm more comfortable with it and it is more flexible. I think avoiding development at all costs is a good way to go to drastically reduce support time which is why I feel a cms would be a good option. Unless I develop custom modules (which I plan to avoid), we should be able to rely on the module creators for support. I'm also working under the assumption that I will be maintaining this for the life of the system. I'm not planning to get underway on this until sometime in December, both because of my schedule and because I would like to get all of these issues on the table and have some time to formulate ideas on how to best approach them.

Mail Chimp: there's an app (module) for that. I'm not sure what email you're talking about, if you mean this listserve, it's administered my mailman which is not the easiest to integrate with but I have done it before.

Like I was saying, I really don't have the time to work on this just yet and I get the feeling that it's really just you (Momoko) and I that will be interested in taking it on until there's more done (based on the responses I've received). If you do have free time right now you could help by getting started on requirements, especially for a first phase and then possibly later ones with less critical components. However we should probably move some of these discussions off of this list.

I've been in contact with the Van folks and they seem to be fairly organized but all I know so far is that they've just got their site up at bikebike.org.

Just my 2 cents...  I am a software engineer by trade and degree and I use Drupal and Joomla for most things, but while both of them have powerful functionality, both of them are often way over the head of most of this crowd.  Given that 90% of software development is in support -- I stopped pushing them as solutions because support always fell back on me.

I agree in lots of ways that we should limit the number of logins and distinct services.  But at the same time, after using some of the web services available out there, it's hard for me to see us creating something better.  Mail chimp, can be really helpful in seeing what emails get bounced back, also their templets are attractive.  We could also use something like sendgrid to help monitor how effective our mail out is.  How is email currently handled at bikecollectives.org?

If the stack overflow can be done on drupal that's great.  Certainly, I will be available to help with testing and design.  What kind of Q&A will we have?  Just about bike collectives?  Just whatever get posted?  Maybe these things are not vital to know now.  So what is vital...
  • The contact list in a csv. name, email,
  • A message - Such as the location and date of this years bikebike!

I wish we could all (people who want to work on this) meet up and divy up the task list.
Do you know what Vancouver is doing to publicize this years bikebike?

That sounds fantastic. Increasing the number of access points to organizations such at ours is always a plus!

Thanks for clarifying,

Once again, not insinuating that I would like to replace the thinktank, it's a great place for individuals to discuss ideas about our organizations. The idea of the directory/newsletter would be to get a hold of organizations directly, many of whom are not represented here because they do not wish to be part of these discussions.

As someone relatively new to the Think Tank list, I am finding it quite useful. While it is a relatively high volume of email, I would like to see this forum for discussion and support continue to exist. I think it is a valuable resource for the type of work that we are all working to achieve.

Cheers,

Hey folks, it's probably not a new idea but especially with upcoming information about Bike!Bike! I've been toying with the idea of starting a no-reply mailing list. There's a lot of logistics that we'd have to get worked out and it's something that I scarcely have time to administer but I wanted to get a general room temperature on this.

One idea that I had that might help us smooth out some other issues as well was to replace the content on bikecollectives.org with a sign up form for bike collectives (not touching the wiki of course). Bike collectives would sign up as an organization giving their general email address and location and possibly a few other details. We could talk about having a few administrators that could send out notices, likely at most one a month although probably much more rarely than that and in addition we could use the information to know more about our community at large. This would also open up the possibility of putting bikecollectives.org to better use.

My main concern is that, due to the nature of the think tank (long discussions, off-topic discussions, in-fighting) we are keeping many organizations in the dark about information that we would like them to know about.

I'd appreciate any feedback and possibly volunteers!

Thanks!
