Thank you for your interest in CAT's Framebuilding Apprenticeship.

Currently we are accepting  applications for our
next session (July - December 2012). We have two
openings left.  If you have been considering the
program for a while, you will be interested to
know that we recently revised our fee structure to
be all-inclusive. The change to an all-inclusive
system does not represent increased costs across
the board, but rather offers an easier way for
everyone to handle the existing costs. We made
this change after discussions with previous
participants who expressed a desire to see a
simpler system that laid out all the costs out
front. Here are some of the details. You can find
more at http://hpm.catoregon.org/?page_id=329

Application/ processing fee: $25 (Non-refundable)

Fees for the Apprenticeship are $8960. There is a
$1500 non-refundable deposit. Fees are
all-inclusive and are broken down as follows:

      Apprenticeship Tuition     $6000

Rent (5 months at $300 per month)*
Apprentices live on site.      $1500

Components for Long Haul** (priced 10% above
wholesale cost)     $730

Long Haul rack or flatbed with aluminum
treadplate     $180

      Human Powered Network development fee***
$400

      Required personal gear (welding helmet,
etc)     $150

      Total     $8960

    * There is also a $300 refundable deposit

** The component fees include a complete build
with the SRAM Dual Drive 3×9 hub and Avid bb7
mechanical disc brakes front and rear. We want
each apprentice to build a Long Haul that is ready
to ride at the end of the program and
representative of Human Powered Machines product
(a standard build).

*** The Human Powered Network Development fee
will be used to  develop infrastructure and pursue
grants  for the Human Powered Network. This is a
big job that requires the attention of a
professional.

If you have further questions, I will be happy to
discuss them with you. I am at CAT on Wednesday or Thursday
afternoons, usually between 3 and 5 PM. If you
want to make an appointment, please call 541-344-1197
anytime and leave a message for me. Thanks!

Hi, Derek,

Can you give me more information about this apprenticeship?
When/where is it?

Thanks!
Irina

Subject: [TheThinkTank] Cargo Bike Frame Building Apprenticeship

Hello Think Tankers. We have been trying to post but for some reason no luck with our email humanpowerednetwork@catoregon.org

For THE HUMAN POWERED NETWORK:

With the current popularity of cargo bikes we have seen an influx of builders and importers bringing more bikes to market. But it’s not just about bikes.

For over 20 years, Jan VanderTuin through Human PoweredMachines has been focused on localizing the production of cargo bikes and fitting them into community. Its time to pass it on. The apprenticeship program prepares individuals to create their own unique, bicycle-based social enterprise and shop. We aren’t just retaining for bike building…we emphasize finding broader context for your skills. For example; your shop might also be a teaching facility for at risk kids. Or you may have a CSA delivery business driven by cargo bike.
We offer intensive, hands on training in :
-Welding, brazing, machining and powder coating.
-Designing and prototyping in computer aided design (CAD)
-Industrial sewing based on our production line of rain gear.
-Organic gardening with emphasis on the true cost of food
            -Marketing, website and graphic design
Our dream? To create a formal association, the Human Powered Network. To bring together smaller scale frame builders into a cooperative entity  using the established designs of Human Powered Machines. These designs are offered as open-source to apprentices who have completed the program.
