Community Cycles doesn't do work trade really. I brought it up at one point, and the majority thought it would be too much work setting it up and offering it, with little to no need for it. For the times when someone does visit our shop and want to purchase something but can't afford to in cash, our shop manager handles those transactions as needed, at his or her discretion

We actually just expanded into a space next door, with the plan that we'll have a dedicated retail area, where nicer/vintage-y parts will go, and some new retail things, lights, bells, seat bags, locks, and some consumables like tubes and cables. It's still in the works, but I imagine date the nicer/used stuff, and then what doesn't sell in x days gets ebayed.

For complete bikes that come in that are nicer than the norm, we'll clean them up and sell them in the showroom/craigslist. For nice or vintage parts, we currently ebay those.

We used to allow for EAB'ers to pick a bike off the showroom floor for up to $200, but we recently stopped that. A $200 bike would be a really nice one. Most go for $100 to $140. After checking some numbers,we realized that it was gutting the showroom, and we were losing out on sales, which brings us quite a bit of cash.

I'd personally love to see a real work trade program, but I don't see it happening soon...

Hope that helps!

Everyone wants the nice bikes / parts, only those that don't know any better aren't savy yet (and that never lasts long if they hang around a shop).  So what does your shop do with the nice stuff in regards to work-trade?  We are trying to develop a policy in SLC.

I have heard some shops don't allow trade over a certain dollar value...
I have heard some shops set work-trade at an unskilled labor rate of $5...

Sincerely,
