Currently we have an excel spreadsheet that everyone (not just youth) is signed into each time they visit the shop. A good volunteer greeter is necessary to ensure people sign-in before they start to work or wander around. We have a big painted sign (that says to wait and sign-in) and counter/window but most people just start walking in/around without a greeter there to sign them in.
In early 2012 we are eagerly anticipating using a database system, developed by one of our volunteers, that will track dates that each person visited/how many times they visited/what they did when they were here etc, for grant writing purposes. It will also keep track of youth permission slips, volunteer contact information, our finances, and bike inventory. If it all works to plan we could potentially share the technology with the group as others have.
It will be similar to but not exactly like: http://freehub.bikekitchen.org/ and http://volunteer.slcbikecollective.org/shop_welcome.php

Hi Andrew,
Our kids sign in - we use just one sheet per day where each student puts down their full name, time in/out, and how they are getting home.
When someone new walks in, we show them the binder with the sign in sheet and have them sign in. We also walk around with the sheet at the middle of each day's session and ask the kids if they've remembered to sign in.
This works really well for us.
What hasn't worked is our time dollar sheets, where we have an individual sheet for each student.
I hope this helps!

Hi all, ****
What are you all doing to track attendance at your programs? Currently each kid that walks through our door is assigned their own sign-in sheet and is asked to sign-in each day that they come in (see attached sign-in sheet). This past year or so it has been an ongoing challenge to get kids to sign-in each day. We have tried to explain the importance of the data, but often times kids simply forget! What are you all doing to more accurately track the kids that access your programs on a daily, monthly, yearly basis? I have been researching different online solutions or “cooler” ways to sign-in, but all options are way too pricy!****
Your ideas would certainly be a huge help!!!!****
