Great idea. There is a couple of videos where a bike mechanic from NY walks around grading peoples lock techniques (here: http://bikehacks.com/bike-lock-grading-streetfilms/). The idea of having your lock be more expensive than your bike is common in NYC. I remember walking around and seeing old crappy bikes locked with Faggedaboudit chains.
Bike thieves sometimes undo bolts that hold posts, including light posts, into the ground, so that when people lock to them they can easily remove the bolts. I think it was Ivan that pointed some of these spots out to me in Chicago.

I wonder if any shops out there have some kind of policy about what kind of locks will get reused, and which ones just discarded/recycled. I know we see a ton of crappy, cheap, breakable-with-a-wet-noodle wire/cable locks. What do you do with them? Is there a "minimum level of security" on locks that go out from your shops? Do you do any kind of theft awareness/ lock education?
