In Edmonton, we do free bicycle parking at various community events throughout the summer. (photo: http://edmontonpolitics.com/2010/08/12/pedaling-towards-a-cycle-friendly-edmonton/ )

It's not precisely a valet service, though. We just provide the bike racks (similar to these -- relatively light and easy to transport by bike trailer) and someone to sit next to the racks. We only give paired-tickets to people that come without any kind of lock. We also usually have a mechanic or two on hand at the busier events, to do minor repairs and tune-ups. We bring portable repair stands and tools for this.

All of our mechanics and monitors are volunteers, and we're never paid to be at any events (although we do collect modest donations at some bike parking events).

(The Edmonton Folk Music Festival also does their own free bike parking, which also expects you to bring your own lock and park your bike yourself, but gives tickets to everyone that comes in, and volunteers check your ticket against your bike's ticket on the way out.  Calgary Folk Fest works the same way.)

Do groups doing bicycle valet services generate significant revenue from them?

Hi there -

A bit south in San Luis Obispo, CA, we run valet at the regular Thursday night Farmers' market (there are 2-3 other markets on different days though).  And we just parked our 10,000th bike.  Our coordinator is on this mailing list, I'll ping him so you can get more info, or ping me if he you don't get connected.   See the website too - www.slobikelane.org.

The bicycle coalition here (www.slobikelane.org again) runs both the local bike kitchen and valet programs.  We don't currently combine wrenching and valet, but discuss it all the time!  During bike month we had mechanics inspect all bikes coming through valet and inform people of the problems, that felt really good, but didn't get the problems directly fixed.

Side note to everybody - I'm always curious where people are operating, and sometimes your messages don't indicate your location or organization.  Is SC Santa Cruz or South Carolina for example.  Perhaps I could ask for people to share that geographic info with us in your intros or signatures??  Thanks everybody for your participation in this mailing list!

hi, all,
It's been a while since I posted to this list (though I lurk now and then), and I missed seeing everyone at the last bike!bike!, but I have a quick favor to ask:

I'm helping write an article about bike valet services (bike parking at events that draw too many bikes to simply lock up) and it occurred to me that there are probably lots of folks/ projects doing this as a form of outreach that I don't know about.

Here in SC it is most reliable at the farmer's market (where I currently get paid to do it -- oogle bikes, chat w/ cyclists, eat veges; pretty rad).
I know that the San Francisco Bike Coalition does a lot of this on an event-to-event basis.

Other places that you know about? Particularly successful instances? Anyone combining parking with wrenching?

Reply on or off list.

warmly,
kyle
