We bit the bullet and just paid for Quickbooks POS, Costco had the package (drawer, scanner, receipt printer) for $1600. I have also seen it for sale on techsoup.org for $80 (http://home.techsoup.org/stock/pages/product.aspx?id=G-41216), but you would probably need to track down all the hardware.Point of sale system for nonprofit retail:
