BikeBike,
     Was fabulous and real!
I am teeming with ideas and energy from being there.
I applaud the organizers who worked their asses off to make it great on a very human level; people who are doers and clear thinkers!
     Bravo to you all!
The world improves one bike at a time!
Cheers,
Gary

Bike Bike was awesome!  I can't think of a better way to spend a weekend
than with a bunch of freaks who're working towards getting people on bikes.

It's hard to summarize as we all had different experiences at various
workshops, conversations and rides.

Here in Boulder we've had a hard time involving the elite cyclists and
mountain bikers in our coop.  One of the big points I took away from the
weekend came from the advocacy workshop.  When organizing an event try
to set up as an umbrella so other cycling groups can add their events
under it.  I think it was Free Ride that organized Bike Fest which was a
one or two month long thing.  They reached out to other groups like Bike
Pittsburgh whose membership nearly doubled because of their
participation in the event.

I probably have the details of this wrong but the concepts are correct.
The more we can incorporate our events with other cycling groups the
more we can work together in building bicycle culture.

We'll definitely keep this in mind when organizing future events.

Peace

These are good points, but I just want to also mention that it's
impossible to make yourself completely accessible to the entire
community.  Some decisions about bike shops that will make many women
more comfortable in the space, for example, will make some dudely dudes
less comfortable.  Some decisions that will make middle class people
feel more comfortable, will alienate working class people.  And there
are a hundred more ways this can be broken down...

I'm not trying to detract from what Sam is saying at all, I think people
need to be thinking about whether their bike project appeals only to an
in-crowd, and whether that's what they really want.  There are also, of
course, a lot of win-win choices bike projects can make in appealing to
different groups of people, and we need to be wracking our brains to
come up with more of these, but sometimes, peoples' interests are to
some degree irreconcilable, and though we need to be aware, as socially
conscious people, of who we might be alienating through some of our
actions, it's not always the worst thing to be doing so.

Your voice started to crack around the first day of BikeBike. You must have been yelling quite a bit.

But yes. Most beautiful experience of my recent life. It was fascinating experiencing such a convention, especially one in which scores of like-minded individuals wishing to make this world a better place simply met up and taught each other various things pertaining to our respective goals in life. Such a concept really boggles the heck out of my brain. I can't wait to implement the stuff I learned in my activities here at home, and I am peeing my pants in anticipation of next year's.

I mostly enjoyed the discussions about gender-based issues in the shops and tried to apply them to areas in the rest of my life. It was really interesting focusing on that for the weekend and then returning to my Women's Studies 100 class on Monday. Such a juxtaposition. I almost wanted to yell "oh, please, we've already been over that, let's move on to something more pressing than G.I. Joes and Barbies."

Also, forming connections that are vital to traveling around this continent was a great plus.

So, as the old Tony Bennett song goes, "I left me voice in San Francisco."
