I disagree with the idea "a waiver doesn't mean much legally." The meaning is State dependent and significant in even in the most waiver unfriendly States. You can learn more about the landscape and get some ideas here. Research your local laws to ensure legal effect (Also, try checking other, established, local event websites). I strongly advise the use of waivers for participants, volunteers, rentals and 3rd party contractors.
