I've researched this a little. Most rubber recyclers have enough trouble dealing with car tires and won't even bother with bike tires. The process to extract the usable rubber is quite extensive and usually a bit toxic. The only other option is to reuse them. There are a few artists that will use used rubber tires and tubes in their projects (bags, wallets, etc). Unfortunately, here in Sacramento we just dump them. A shame, I know but there isn't much else to do. Maybe someone needs to start a retreading service?

Hey, gang.
At Off the Chain, in Anchorage, we have piles and piles of used tires. We can't use all of them, are tired of paying to store them, and don't want to throw so much rubber into a landfill. What are other shops doing with all of their extra, un-useable tires?
