hi carl,

at community cycles, our paid mechanic's classes--6 two-hour sessions, fwiw-- comes with the student's choice of either zinn and the art of road bike maintenance, or zinn and the art of mountain bike maintenance. we count ourselves extremely lucky to count among our neighbors lennard zinn and zinn publishing. he's very sympathetic to our cause, and has even taught a class as a fundraiser at our shop, and bought a bike from us for a family member.

one thing we suggest to our student, especially those who ride regularly but are just beginning to get into maintaining their own bikes, is to make notes about their own bikes in the book itself. basic things like tire and tube size for the very beginners, but also things like dropout width, BB spindle length, size of stem/steerer tube, seat post diameter, etc. this way, they can have all of the information they  need when it's time to go to the bike shop to buy a replacement part, and it's all in one location. it also makes for a good lesson subject, to go over all the parts of a bike which could be different and/or cause trouble down the line if the rider buys the wrong size/compatibility component.

We're just about to roll out a 4-part series of bike mechanic classes (two-hour sessions).

Do any of you offer a general bike repair book as part of the fee or have a recommended bike repair book that you stock?

Suggested soft cover bikes include
*Anybody's Bike Book (updated version that includes indexed shifters)
*Bicycling magazine's Complete Guide to Bicycle Maintenance and Repair
*Park Tool School student manual (140+ pages, spiral bound)
