SLO Bike Kitchen (www.slobikekitchen.org) in San Luis Obispo, CA uses Facebook. We're in a university town, so it works well for that demographic. We definitely get interesting comments there and it's a fun place to post random links that bike geeks might want to see. But not all our fans (in both FB-speak and normal person speak) are subscribed there - only 47 to be exact. Our e-mail mailing list has over 300 people and it's what we use when someone gives us their contact info. (San Luis Obispo has a population of about 50,000 if you're curious...)
You asked about donors - especially for us, when someone walks in with a donation of parts or a bike, I try to ask how they know about us. 50% of the time it's due to the posts we have on craigslist. I'd almost say that craigslist is more effective for us than Facebook or the mailing list.

Does your shop have a facebook page? do you use it? how? what have you learned that works or doesn't work for getting volunteers, money, support, etc?
I'm interested in hearing from shops or individuals, if you're interested in sharing. Feel free to email me off list if you'd like.
