Alternatively (since burning plastic isn't great), if you take care to ensure that you're cutting off the ends of your zip ties directly straight across (at a 90-degree angle to the tie itself) then it doesn't have the chance to become razor-sharp!
If you're teaching young'uns, it's a really good thing to ensure that they do to get them into the habit of it.
