Re: [TheThinkTank] Recession Chic
How many bikes can you make from a hummer I hope this Comm major is enlightened in this interaction. but on the other hand does it mater how we get them out of the car and on to the bike a good deal of the lemmings in cars didn't make the choice to drive from their point of view they had no options cars were just what people do to survive. The times are only going to make it harder for us and better in the long run for our movement. In Los Angeles " fixed gear hipsters" are every where or so i am told when i see someone on a bike, fixed or not, i see one less car. If it becomes chic to use bicycles we win! If style mavens every where identify with bicycles we win! still I would be inclined not to be interviewed by this guy we have a long way to go. Jim

Subject: Interview To: info@therecyclery.org
My name is David, and I am a Sophomore here at Northwestern. I am taking a class called Persuasive Images in the School of Comm, and have chosen to do a my final project on the idea of "Recession Chic". My group and I are interested in why those who can spend whatever they want, choose to emulate a more modest lifestyle. Regardless of the actual savings, the appearance of budgeting and thrift is now stylish. One aspect of the recession chic lifestyle that we are looking into is bicycle riding. I was curious if you could tell us a little about the motivations for bicycle riding, health, style (as in fixed gear hipsters), going green, etc. Also I am curious as to how your collective has been doing with the recession.
I would love to talk with you, and ideally, I would love to be able to videotape the interview if you feel comfortable with that. If this is something that you would be up for, let me know when you are available this coming week!
Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
Hope to have the opportunity to meet you soon, David

You have an opportunity to engage with a real human being. He is looking to understand the world he lives in. This is where bicycle evangelism starts, and where communal understanding grows. You have something to learn from this person, go find out what it is.
Is he wrong for being the product of his society? Are you better/smarter/wiser because you have had a different experience on this planet?

In addition, speak to him to teach. Isn't that why we are and what we do? If we don't enlighten him, perhaps his readers or classmates will learn something. Some students ride their bikes anyway. Of these riders, some will certainly feel that they are alone and riding in a vacuum. This is a way for them to get involved. And for participating shops to perhaps gain new members\volunteers in to the fold. It is very easy to discount people because we think that we are better or more enlightened. That is snobbery and it is not prettier just because it has fewer wheels. If anything we should try to change car culture by taking up any chance for outreach that is handed to us. Up here in the snowy feezer of my home I hear all the time on the radio that we should not allow recessions to go to waste. This is the time that people are open to new ideas and to try new things. So let's offer alternatives (bikes to car culture). Yes that requires open-mindedness on our part. But is that so bad?
