Prices of New Cables and Housing?
Hey, how do folks price their new cables and housing? And howzabout you recycled cables and housing? Is this an area in which it's ok to underprice the retail markup of commercial shops, and if so what's the rationale for doing so per se?
We have our FIRST EVER batch of new cables and there are a number of ideas about how to price them. Help us with your wisdom, fam.

We get ours from QBP in the box of 100. They cost us $0.33 cents each. We don't sell them directly to the public for the most part, but we use them in repairs and they go for $1 each. We reuse housing for the most part so the cost is almost nothing.

We don't keep old housing / cables as we've had problems in the past with proper storage and also just generally being too rusted to use again.
We have a suggested donations list and currently have cables at $1.00/cable & housing at $0.50/ft. This is definitely undercutting shops but it hasn't been an issue for us thus far. Possibly due to us serving different clients than our local shops.
Attached is our Suggested Price List. I believe we started with the Suggested Donation list from the Bike Dump in Winnipeg (thanks!) and modified from there.

At Bike Farm we charge the following for new cable/housing:
Cables, brake or shifter $2 for non-member, $1.50 for members
Cable Housing, brake or shift $1 per foot
We save old housing and cables in a large plastic container in coils, and we do not charge for them. Free for everyone to use.

At Reno Bike Project we do pretty much just like Bike Farm, above. $2/cable and $1/foot of housing. Used cables and housing are free/donations accepted.

We also don't re-use old cables/housing (however sometimes people will still grab it from our recycle bin). Typically we explain why it's better to use new (as Arlin explained). If people can't afford the price we have a Fund set aside that and we'll give them new cables/housing.
Our prices are $1.50 per cable, and $1/ft for housing.
We stick pretty hard to keeping our prices at a 50% markup from our supplier so that it's a fair market price. (Our prices are set at cables we bought quite a few years ago when we did a big order...we have to order more so they'll likely go up a tad soon).
Because we have a fund put aside for folks that can't afford parts it means that people can pay-what-they-can or not at all. We don't advertise that fund really but we let anyone know when they come in not to worry about money as a barrier to repairs.

At Sac Bike Kitchen, we also do $2/each for cables and $1/ft for housing with used cables and housing being free. We used to not allow cables and housing sales for projects outside the shop but recently changed this as our contacts at the local bike shops made pretty clear what we do doesn't effect them in any appreciable way. It probably helps that our hours are limited and we are usually open when they are closed...

Used cables are fine to re-use as long as they are in good condition. Cables from the rear can often move to the front and live a longer life.
<SNIP>
@ Bike Pirates we have always sold cable assemblies (cable, housing, ferrules/caps) as a unit, rather than having to figure our how much housing each participant has used. Our price has been $5 for as long as I can remember and applies to both brake and shift lines.

Josh's recent thread had me thinking that people might be interested in our used cable and housing storage systems.
(also, Josh: our used cables are priced the same as all our other used parts, a mandatory pay-what-you-want donation)
At Recycle Ithaca's Bicycles we inspect and condition used cables and housings before storing them. It's fairly easy and simple.
Cables having lost strands, or housings with cracked shielding are put into scrap.
If cables are intact but a little rusty, we steel wool them. We also un-kink them and cut off frayed ends. This means they are ready for the next person to use, but perhaps more importantly more likely to be used
- we try to avoid the syndrome where we have parts piling up because no
one selects them because they seem like junk.
We store the used cables as whips. They hang vertically. This means people get to find ones of proper length much more easily, and longer cables aren't incessantly getting wasted through people cutting them shorter when they can just as easily find one already the proper length. Each whip can store dozens of cables.
Housings are a little trickier because they have no heads to prevent them pulling through the zip ties, so we add friction using an inner tube. Cables and housings get fed in through the top, which is another reason to clip the frayed bits off the ends, they'd never insert cleanly if the ends were a mess.
These whips are also very portable.
Shorter housings just get stored in a tray in the parts room.
Pictures offer a better explanation. I've added some bonus pictures of our shop :)
