Is there such a thing as a listing of Demographics available for Bike Collectives.
I am trying to start one in a small city / rural area in West Virginia. I am trying to understand what characteristics I should focus my research on to tell if my are will support a bike collective.
I look forward to reading your reply.
Thanks again,

a simple formula:
start in your garage. if you're collecting too many bikes, and getting rid of those bikes, your area will support one. if you're the only one collecting bikes, and doing everything you can to get them out to people, and your space is overflowing, then maybe it won't...

At bikebike 2 yrs ago, someone made the comment that there should be a bike-collective every eight blocks. I'm inclined to agree. They should be as common as gas stations.
The more critical type of support you may need is a sufficient number of committed volunteers.

My garage is full of bikes in different states of disrepair. Most need tires and tubes, repairs, etc... To the prior owner the cost of the needed repairs outweighed the value and they were discarded. Outside of Walmart (China) where do you buy tubes / tires? How do you prevent a carbon footprint on your consumables?

Sounds like you just need volunteers besides you now. Pick a regular night once a week, invite people over, and build a community [bike shop]. These links might help too...

In order of frequency at our shop:
- Scavenged from other discarded bikes (we patch a lot of tubes)
- Donated by a local green outdoor coop org (in our case MEC, perhaps
your have an REI or similar nearby) 3) Used donations from local bike shops 4) Purchased at a hefty discount from a local bike shop
How do you prevent a carbon footprint on your consumables?
Most of them are donated. We use a biodegradable degreaser (bio-cycle).
