Hey, gang.
At Off the Chain, in Anchorage, we have piles and piles of used tires. We can't use all of them, are tired of paying to store them, and don't want to throw so much rubber into a landfill. What are other shops doing with all of their extra, un-useable tires?
-Chris Off the Chain www.offthechainak.org
I've researched this a little. Most rubber recyclers have enough trouble dealing with car tires and won't even bother with bike tires. The process to extract the usable rubber is quite extensive and usually a bit toxic. The only other option is to reuse them. There are a few artists that will use used rubber tires and tubes in their projects (bags, wallets, etc). Unfortunately, here in Sacramento we just dump them. A shame, I know but there isn't much else to do. Maybe someone needs to start a retreading service?

We pay to have them recycled. Try your local tire yard. Ask around thou because some places burn them with coal, and others make roadways, playground padding etc out of them. We have been able to get multiple shops in town to save old tires and tubes. Selling the inner tubes to the rubber yards almost pays for the hauling and recycle of the tires. P

Chris and all,
We have had similar problems finding a good reuse or recycling process or flow for old tires.
one interesting use that will not solve all the problem is reuse as a fenders. I know kinda heavy, not the prettiest, and a pain to make work but they are water proof and close to the correct shape. here is something similar to what I have seen ... but the versions I have seen are entirely done by bending, drilling and bolting (no welding):

best of luck

Our un-usable tires get thrown out with the rest of the garbage. Un-patchable inner tubes are used as tie straps, cut into strips for attaching pedals to bikes in storage and as handlebar wrap.

I was interested to see the link to Utah Tire Recycler on that page. It looks like that is Liberty Tire Recycling[1]. They happen to have a location in Utah. There are a few other locations in the US but AFAICT nothing in Alaska. In fact, Utah is the closest thing on the West Coast. Maybe they'll open something closer some day. I'd be interested to see how the separate the thread and metal from the rubber.
You should be careful in taking used rubber to "tire recyclers". A lot of them don't do any recycling but instead should be called "tire disposers". They often end up in landfills after some compaction (non-shredded tires take up too much space).

Once a year there is a big River Sweephttp://www.ohiocanal.org/riversweep.htmclean-up here, and we have a deal with the County to take our bike tires with the dumped car tires they collect -- we tie them in bunches with tubes and their vols pick them up. If we miss that, a call to the County has gotten us into the collection center for free -- the one time I neglected to call (on a day I had the U-haul anyway) they charged me $77 for 3/4 ton.
We scrap about 1 1/2 ton per year, but we have pretty high standards for used tires, and pretty high prices for our sale bikes (about half of which get new tires), compared to most co-ops -- a few too many tire failures came back for us to take chances.
So try calling the Solid Waste District and plead non-profit: the amount of rubber you would add to what they dispose of already is tiny, and when you figure in all the bikes you're keeping out of the wastestream... Jim

We actually pay ($1 per tire I think) to have dead tires collected and recycled. We have been unable to find anyone willing to recycle dead inner tubes so we cut out the valves and give them away as free tie downs. All usable road tires or off road tires with a continuous center tread are re-sold. About 90% of our knobby off road tires are sent to Africa through BFH (Bicycles For Humanity).
