Hi I'm Ray Keener, Retail Editor of Bicycle Retailer and Industry News magazine, former President (2013-16) and current Industry Liaison with Community Cycles here in Boulder. I wrote a BRAIN story about community bike shops back in 2016. I'd be glad to share the story if there a way to attach a .pdf?
It's time to do this story again. Last time, someone at bike!bike! provided us with with a list of community shops to which I sent the Survey Monkey. Seeings how this benefits you at bike!bike! and all community shops by providing information, and the industry overall by promoting understanding of what y'all do...
Might you be willing to either provide the list, or send out a link to the survey to your list, please? I'm glad to hear back from anyone on here if you can point me in the right direction!
Cheers and Happy New Year, Ray (303) 525-5489
Hi Ray, I'm not sure how updated it is, but there is a list of community bike organizations on the Bike Collectives site here: https://bikecollectives.org/wiki/Community_Bicycle_Organizations. Hope that's helpful.

Super helpful, thanks, Emily! Here's the previous BRAIN article FYI.
I know it sounds greedy... what I'd really like (if it's available anywhere) is an Excel spreadsheet where I can copy and paste e-mail addresses in one fell swoop.
Barring that, I'll set aside a morning to go through the state-by-state list and fish them out of there! Thanks again, and good luck in 2024!

Closest I can get. A friend of mine is currently working on a pretty big research/media project with North America co-ops.
I can get you a contact if you'd like.

Ray,
We've been working on adding some features to the directory on the wiki and a very helpful volunteer has updated a lot of info for US-based shops, so this should be pretty comprehensive for the shops we already knew about:
Table of shops with contact info: https://bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Special%3ACargoQuery&ta...
The same thing as a CSV file you can open in Excel or similar: https://bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Special%3ACargoQuery&ta... (click the "View CSV" link to download the file)
With either of those you can use the "Modify query" section at the bottom to change what data it pulls, whether it gives you a table or a file, etc.. More advanced features like filtering require some knowledge of SQL, at least for now.
There are almost certainly still missing shops and bad data in that list, but for the US it's probably as up-to-date as it has been in several years.
I hope that's helpful!
April Wick (she/her)
P.S. If BRAIN is interested in supporting the maintenance and further development of that list and similar projects, we've got a way to handle donations now https://opencollective.com/bikebike-everywhere/projects/tecnologia-tech. You could even earmark it specifically for something like improvements and updates to the list of Collectives, if you want.

Doesn't look like the Wiki allows editing for Special Pages. Any
suggestions?
Bobby Kennedy
Howdy Bobby,
That table is automatically created by pulling information from an individual bike collectives' page in the Wiki.
Start by finding your country on the following page and then creating a new page for your collective within the proper state/province/region. Copy a template from another collective that has a nice setup so that the proper tags are in there which will then automatically populate the info to that table. https://bikecollectives.org/wiki/Community_Bicycle_Organizations
The list is created using something called "Cargo Query" (don't ask me what that means, I just logically stopped and figured this out while trying to answer your question). You can learn what the different info that is displayed on it by looking at the "shop_info" section at the bottom of this page: https://bikecollectives.org/wiki/Special:CargoTableDiagram
You're welcome to copy the text from our shop to use in setting up your own shop if you'd like: https://bikecollectives.org/wiki/Bozeman_Bike_Kitchen
Cheers, Sam
Thank-you, Sam!
There used to be a boilerplate that could be selected from a dropdown box after creating a page, but for some reason, it is now missing. We'll have look into bringing back that functionality.
Those directions are at https://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Contribute_to_this_Wiki...
But now, after creating a link for your collective on the Community_Bicycle_Organizations page, simply click on that link, and copy/paste the template shown on https://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/Template:Community_Bicycle_Organization... into the new page, and fill in information about your organization in the template.

I just observed that https://bikecollectives.org/wiki/Community_Bicycle_Organizations is currently set to administrators only, so to create a page, simply go to https://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/My_Organization [1] , change My_Organization to your organizaiton, for instance https://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/DMSStreet , and then paste in the template.

I know the community bike shop (we didn't call it a "bike shop" as that gave the wrong impression as it was an educational DIY shop and not a "pay-&-leave-to-be-fixed shop," though we sold bikes, newer parts, clothing, &c., that is, did have a commercial element) made a dramatic shift from a "coöperative" to a "collective" during the pandemic as new people came in, took over despite the rules set up by the community, and ran all the old volunteers out, and very much changed the place...
The original conflict between the Board and the Managers/Workers shifted to one of how to philosophically run the shop, though this took years to play out and there were several attempts to take it over. Instead of a bike shop trying to help people with their bikes, get people into and onto bikes, and teach people how to fix their own bikes, all in a community-based manner, it simply became another top-down agenda-based arm of an elite college that put a particular agenda before bikes. Bikes and bicyclists simply tools of an agenda that can just as easily drop bicycles and cyclists from their agenda, as so many bike organizations have done.

This digest references messages to the list from Andrew Ballentine and Luke Box. Somehow I didn't get either of these messages.
Looking at the ThinkTank archive @ https://lists.bikecollectives.org/hyperkitty/list/thethinktank@lists.bikecol... , the messages didn't seem to be there either.
Did everyone else get them?

Nevermind! I figured out what happened, Luke+Andy did post, but in Ray's thread that wasn't a solicitation for stories, but rather contact information. Confusing for a minute!

Howdy!
Doesn't look like the Wiki allows editing for Special Pages. Any suggestions? I'd like to update the info for the Des Moines Street Collective (formerly the Des Moines Bicycle Collective). Thank you!
