Resources for starting a community bike shop
Hi There,
We are starting a community bike shop in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories and wondered if there were any resources out there with tips on starting up and things that others have learned in the process of starting their own community shops.
We are in the process of putting together a first order for tools, to allow us to have at least three people working in the shop at once during community classes and for volunteers. Is anyone aware of a tool list that might give us some extra direction?
any suggestions would be much appreciated,
Oldtown Bike Works Yellowknife, NWT
Someone once told me Park Tool does a discounted basic set for cheap(er) for first time co-ops...am I right? Someone else can probably talk more on this.

Funny you should ask! We were asked the exact same question by another non-bike oriented NGO. Attached in our initial answer - guidelines.

I started Brockville Bike Ministry on a Grant called Horizons for Seniors. $25,000 GRANT FOR SENIORS GIVING BACK TO their COMMUNITY from federal govt. Paid for enough professional tools/bike stands ( Park Tools ) to allow 8-16 youth/seniors whatever to build bikes at one time.

Here's a copy of our first order. We started up last year. We order from Babac in Quebec - if you have a minimum order of $250, they will set up an account for you and give items at 50% of list price.
