Jonathan, Boulder uses accrual accounting. We are expecting to be of a size that would require an external audit and that would require financial statements to be accrual based. Receiving dollars from government sources may also require audited statements and therefore accual financials. There are guidelines given in GAAP as well as the AICPA. other questions, please ask. When our bookkeeping volunteer stepped aside, we took the opportunity to move from a dedicated installation of Quickbooks to the online version. We have an accountant on retainer, so most of our volunters don't have much (or anything) to do with it. That makes it hard to give an organizational critique, but I can say that I've found it pretty effective from the reporting side of things, without having to rely on whoever's wearing the finance hat.

We've been using it for about 5 years now and it's been great. It allows multiple people like the bookkeeper, accountant and ED to access it at any time. It can sync to your bank accounts and has yet to crash.

I am not an accountant but use QuickBooks for my HOA management business and plan to use if for Bicycle Longmont's accounting. As I understand it (real accountants, please correct me if I am wrong), the "jump" is very easy with QB as there is no difference in the set-up and reporting can be done as either cash or accrual by a simple selection during report generation.
