Community Bike Center at Sports Stadium?
Anyone have any experience with a community bike shop or bike center being developed as a part of, or connected to, a sports stadium?
St. Paul recently approved - and provided property tax relief (but no direct subsudies) - the development of an 18,000 seat stadium in a mixed residential/commercial area of St. Paul. People are already talking about issues with parking and how to do bike/walk/transit promotion. I can't help but think that this would be a great opportunity to put in a bike center with retail, repair, and classes and programs.
But I just haven't seen anything along these lines ever having been tried. Anyone know anything about it?

Not a sports stadium, but this is something maybe similar at a hospital: https://bcgreencare.ca/vgh-cycling-centre

The Sports Center idea is certainly worth exploring, but the expense might be an issue. If this is a major commercial endeavor, then they're going to want to make money off of every square inch. Providing cheap or donated space for a nonprofit might not be very attractive. Even if it is partially paid for by the city, money might be an issue unless some set-aside for community support is required.
Just my cynical 2 cents.

I wonder if they could take it out of their marketing budget. You could also cite some stats that show how much cheaper bike parking is for them land use wise compared to car parking. They would be saving money and it'd be great for their image.

There is often 'unusable' space in these types of developments. we were approached about putting in a small 'bike station' under some stairs for a parking garage. If you can keep the footprint to a minimum, space can be found free or dirt cheap- especially if they are looking at measures to reduce auto traffic.
On that last note, there will be huge $ incentive for the developer to reduce parking- a council or other decision maker would look at what alternatives and/or incentives are being provided in order to reduce parking demand.
+1 on finding incentives from the council.
In Vancouver, the City requires bike parking in most new developments, so it could even go beyond just an incentive to an absolute stipulation on the development permit.
