We are going to be hosting several community flat tire events ( come get your kids flat tire fixed ) this summer. We are in need of a couple more bike stands and another 10x10 canopy.
If anyone has extra that they are willing to part with, we would be wicked happy to take it off your hands.

if you have a pile of junker bikes, it's not that difficult to make some that hold 2 bikes apiece. it's been a while, but i'm pretty sure i first saw this design at Derailer in Denver.
i don't have photos of one of these, but it's pretty straightforward and should only take about an hour to build one if you have the parts.
ingredients for one stand:
2 pair of road/drop handlebars, each with a stem. 2 BMX style forks 1 top tube that has the same inner diameter as your bmx fork steer tubes, or close to it. 2 pair of bmx/raised handlebars, each with a stem.
directions:
- cut the dropouts off one pair of bmx forks so you're left with two
exposed tubes. 2. insert a bmx stem in each of these tubes. orient the handlebars so that they're parallel to each other, perpendicular to the fork blades, and at about an 85 degree angle from the fork. 3. take the top tube and slide it over the steer tube of the fork. 4. adjust the bmx bar/stem combo until the top tube is verticle.
this is going to be the base of your stand.
- repeat step 1 with the other pair of forks.
- insert the steer tube of this fork into the upright top tube on the
base. 4. insert a road stem in each fork blade. orient the handlebars so that each pair is opposite each other, and acts as a pair of hooks to cradle the top tube of a bike.
drill and bolt through the top/steer tubes to connect it all together. cover the drop bars with old inner tubes to pad them so they won't scratch up the bikes being worked on.
it's not adjustable, but it;s fairly simple to make and pretty sturdy. if you're concerned about stability, put something heavy on the bmx bars to keep the thing from toppling.
if anyone's interested and these directions aren't as clear to you as they are in my head, i'm happy to sketch out what it looks like and post a drawing.

For anyone who's interested, i've sketched up what it would take to make a stand like i described. hopefully the drawing will be more clear than my prose. you can see the drawing here:
http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/images/c/c0/Bike-part-stand.jpg
Ingredients:
2 drop handlebars 2 road stems that fit the drop handlebars 2 BMX forks with the dropouts cut off squarely one top or other tube with the same inner diameter as the outer diameter of the BMX forks 2 bmx stems 2 bmx handlebars, approximately the same size as one another. 4 axles with 2 nuts and 2 washers apiece a few old inner tubes.
Tools: drill drill bit slightly larger than the axles wrenches for all nuts and bolts used
Optional: wrap top handlebars with inner tubes to protect frame of bicycle being worked on, and/or bottom handlebars to protect the floor from scratches.
That's pretty great. Have you used one?

I'm not marketing it. It's not my design, but I don't think the Derailer folks would mind it being shared for informational purposes. I have used one. The one I built had two upright tubes because one top tube left it too short. I found that for work involving the wheels turning, it was helpful to tie the bike to the stand so it didn't rock itself out of the stand and into your lap. For other repairs, especially fast or static ones, it's great. On May 28, 2012 12:49 PM, "Joshua Muir" muirjoshua@gmail.com wrote:
