Hi all,
Thank you for mapping bike collectives on Google Maps. It's very impressive to see so many of them all over the US.
The French "ateliers" chose to locate theirs on Openstreetmap

Is there an easy way to transfer their location on Google Maps? I cced Julien Allaire who is a "leader" for L'Heureux Cyclage in France.
Happy riding!

This is a map of bike collectives. It may be of some use to you - it was originally created as a way of mapping bike collectives with locations, hours, and contact info for bike touring. If you find other bike collectives during your travels, please feel free to add those to the map.

Christine,
It is possible to transfer their location onto Google Maps. Change the OSM file to a KML file. There are instructions online for doing this. Once it is a KML file, I think it can be merged with the current map; I merged a map of DC bike collectives with the current map once, but forget exactly what I did beyond following instructions from the Internet somehow. Please let me know how it goes!
The Google Map is new enough (and thus linked to from presumably few enough places) that now that I know about this open wiki alternative map, it would be nice to use them instead if anyone can help me figure out how to change it over. I'll try to do a more thorough search for information on that tomorrow.

Yeah... I'm not sure it's exactly an "OSM file" per se - the points marked on the map aren't, as far as I can tell, stored in a format particular to OSM.
In fact, they're actually stored as tab-separated values in this file: http://www.heureux-cyclage.org/plugins/heureuxcyclage/carte/poi.txt
It would be relatively easy, I think, to embed something like this into a bikecollectives.org page. It would also be easier to maintain, since most spreadsheet software can manage tab-separated values.
I'll look into conversions back-and-forth.

Ah, here we go. It's actually using OpenLayershttp://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Openlayers, which allows fairly easy implementation of this sort of thing.
I think we could set one of these up on the Wiki if we want to move away from Google. It would be a little more difficult to add new points, and I'm not sure if it could offer the list of locations on the left - probably not without lots of extra coding. Also, according to their FAQ, it will start getting slow with more than 100-ish points on the map (though I think Google does too). But it would give us more control over the organization of the list. And we'd be using Open Source maps, which is pretty awesome (we could even use open source bike maps! http://www.opencyclemap.org/).
As for adding this to a google map... I could probably convert the OpenLayers list to something that can be converted to KML. Right now I'm using the wrong computer for the task, and don't have much spare time. If it still needs doing in a month... maybe.
