google squared useful for cataloging community bikes shops
For the computery types on the list..
If you enter "community bike shop" (or bicycle collective, etc) into Google Squared, a nifty spreadsheet comes up with a handful of our shops. If anyone wants to take it on, it could be expanded to include everyone and all sorts of useful info. It might be a good way to answer some frequently asked questions, like "who has a youth earn-a-bike program?" or "what's your mission statement?".
-rachael
For the love of spreadsheets, this thing is great! try putting in bottom brackets, then start adding columns like length. Then imagine this thing eating up sheldon browns site and the sutherland manual. compatibility tables, distributor lists, The mind reels with possibilities.
thanks rachael! -Anibal

I think this is a great idea Rachael and Anibal.
I added Velocipede. If no one minds I can start fleshing out a square for "bicycle collective" with stuff like location, mission statement and yes/no columns like "build-a-bike" "youth-programs" "women/trans night" etc...

Do it, Boson!
Other categories or data points to sort out... city, state, urban/suburban/rural, mobile shop, nonprofit, paid staff vs volunteer only, date founded/opened. I'm trying to think of things researchers have asked, as well as what new shop founders would want to know. Also, I'm interested in the models we've tested so these new shop founders could see that, for example and hypothetically, if they are in a rural area, then a mobile shop may be best and it can run on volunteer power.

hmm
so I made this:
http://www.google.com/squared/table/agnYFOOK_DcxFzxEuQG810eA
the problem is that it only allows me to make a finite amount of columns.
if we're actually trying to do this, I'd suggest just creating a spreadsheet and documenting this, and then put it up on the wiki (when its back up...)

Ill write to google. Im sure if we catch the ear of one of their people, they will *love *what we are trying to do with it.if nothing else, im sure they would happily explain how it works and how to stick our data in more effectively. For example, If we can recover the database that is (was?) already on the bikecollective.org site and get google to eat that up, we save ourselves alot of work. Ill be in touch with you both off the listserve. Can someone who has access to whats left of the bikecollectives database get a hold of me?
wooo!
