Hi! I'm looking for a shared ride to Guadalajara for BikeBike, is anyone else from the west coast heading down? I am from Haida Gwaii Bike RePsych in Northern BC, Canada. I could meet up in Oregon or California.
I'm also wondering if the ride to the coast after the conference is still happening! ...getting stoked :)
Steve
Hello!
Yes, there's a ride planned after bike!bike!, not to the coast though, here's the plan:
Route: GDL - Tequila and it's surroundings - GDL Days: 3 (Mon Oct 3rd - Wed Oct- 5th) Distance ridden: 67km (41.6319miles for the imperially inclined) or double that, depends on weather you decide to return by bike or by bus.
Minimum requirements:
• A roadworthy bike (We will provide bikes for bikebike but we can't guarantee they are suitable for the road, depending on the bike you can ask the owner to borrow it for the post-event ride and can use our shop to tune it up if you like but we recommend you bring yours if you wanna do the tour, for safety and to make sure you get a bike) preferably with rack and panniers. • Tool kit and patching supplies. • Water bottles and food.
This route will take us down the Tequila fields (A UNESCO World Heritage landscape) all the way to the town of Tequila (A town with the "Magical Village" distinction) where we can take a tour of the tequila factories (optional, and it costs anywhere from 12USD to 140USD, the first one is a perfectly fine 1 hour tour, the last one is a 10 hour experience that includes an antique train ride, fancy canapés and unlimited amounts of the best possible tequila, to each it's own), then we will hike to the Los Azules Falls. There are several options for camping, hostels and even five stars hotels at Tequila, you decide.
Day 1 (Monday the 5th of october): We leave from Núcleo at 7am. We arrive at tequila at around 1:00PM. We find places to stay, eat and then we can go visit the tequila factories. Then dinner and drinking (if you're into that kind of thing) or just hanging around town until we please. IT COULD RAIN.
Day 2 (Tuesday the 6th of octuber) Breakfast at leisure (you eat at your campsite/hostel/hotel/a street cart/the delicious market/whatever, complete meals come around $80 pesos-$5usd at the market) Then we hike to Los Azules. Pic-Nic, frolicking and soaking at the falls until the afternoon. We return to town around 4:00pm. Then we may dine and engage into more drinking of tequila at one of the traditional Cantinas, or any other activity you might prefer.
Day 3 (Wednesday the 7th of october) We return to GDL either by bike or by bus (You can take a bike on the underside of a bus for no extra charge, although if it's many of us we might have to chip-in to give the driver a tip, the bus fare is $85 pesos, $5.10USD) We leave at 11:00AM, It takes anywhere from 3 to 5 hours to ride back (It's uphill D:). IT COULD RAIN.
As you can see the plan is very loose, you can adhere to it or un-adhere from it at any point, you can try to find a bike here if you want (not guaranteed though), you can bring your own too, you can drive and meet the rest there, you can stick to the group or you can bomb there on your fixie alone (it's rolling hills but mainly downhill), we will take the group down the regular road (not the toll road) which is less safe but more beautiful and more fun, but you can take the autopista (toll road) if you want (it does have a wider shoulder, or any shoulder at all); please know that we don't consider this an unsafe activity, we do it aaaaaaall the time, never had any trouble, but you will be riding next to semis and trucks and speeding cars on a public, very badly mantained road and we're not sure your insurance would cover that, you will ride under your own responsibility, and you will have a great time.
