How many weekly "open hours" does your shop have?
Hi,
Joel Gillespie from The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, here. We're looking at re-vamping our shop hours schedule, and I'm trying to gather some information from other collectives on how many hours you're open to the public and/or members each week. Also, if you have specific uses for any of those hours, like sales-only, or just for structured repair classes, etc., please point that out if you could. Any thoughts or insights you could share (on- or off-list) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you're willing to wait a few weeks I can give a more detailed analysis but so far the census results indicate that over 38 shops, the average is about 20 during the winter months and 25 during the summer with the max being 56 and 90 respectively.

(Nice stats, Godwin.)
MoBo http://mobobicyclecoop.org/:
Open Shop: Wednesdays: 6-9pm Sundays: 6-9pm
Open House (No personal projects, rather volunteer time, monthly basics workshop, committee meetings, special events, etc): Tuesdays: 6-9pm
Women's Open Shop: 3rd Thursday: 6-9pm
Winter Workshop Series: Monday nights in Feb. and March: 7-9pm
*Open house is a new experiment for us that we implemented this winter (Tuesdays were formerly open shop nights). We're really happy with it, and even if we add another open shop with the warmer weather we'll probably still keep it.

If you're willing to wait a few weeks I can give a more detailed analysis but so far the census results indicate that over 38 shops, the average is about 20 during the winter months and 25 during the summer with the max being 56 and 90 respectively.

This doesn't include youth programs including: drop-in sessions, racing team practices, weekend road & MTB group rides, and earn-a-bike classes, as well as volunteer sessions including: facilitator meetings, weekend volunteer projects, which all happen semi-regularly but not necessarily at a definite time.
Hope that helps! Check our website for more info: http://www.neighborhoodbikeworks.org

We are open twice weekly: Open-shop - Wednesdays 6:30-8 - open to the public, we have tools, stands and helpful volunteers and you have a willingness to do what you can and learn Volunteer-shop - Sundays 5-8 - fixing donation bikes that will be sold inexpensively to support the organization, good time to learn
Most of our open times drag on an hour or so beyond the official time, but we like to keep the official close time early just in case we're tried!
We don't have any bike sales in our workshop; we do all sales in events.
We also do a mobile workshop, Thursday 12-2 - offering free minor repairs and referrals.
Lastly, we are based at an university so this guides much of activity. For example, we have sales at the beginning of each semester and limit sales to students (the university gives us free rent on such conditions). But we are totally open to the public.

We at BICAS just tacked on and additional 2 hours to the beginning of Saturdays which is one of our busiest days. We now have several folks working 2 split 4 hour shifts while others (read: the crazies) work a solid 8. We definitely had the demand to open up for more hours but whether we'll run into staffing shortages has yet to be seen.
*Open Shop* Tuesday - Friday: 12 - 7pm Saturday: 10 am - 6pm Sunday: 12 - 4 pm Transgender/Women, 4 - 6 Open Shop
*Build -A-Bike Classes *(during the 8 week class session) Mondays - 4-7 Saturdays - 1-4
*Art Workshops and Open Studio *Open Studio during Open Shop Hours (see above) Thursdays - 4-7 Saturdays - 1-4 designated workshops.
One thing worth noting is that our staff are all paid collective members.
Happy data collecting
