Mozilla search plugin for the ThinkTank archives
Hey all,
I got tried of repeatedly needing to check the archive but then having to go and dig around in my browser or a search engine just to get there and do a search. I know BOOKMARKING ISN'T HARD, but even that doesn't make it as easy as, for instance, a search plugin. So I went over to the mycroft project and made one.
Here is the link to the search plugin, tested working on Firefox. It may or may not work on other browsers: https://mycroftproject.com/install.html?id=120475&basename=bc_thinktank_...
Hopefully this will simplify things for at least a good amount of folks! IMO, the ThinkTank archive ranks up there with Sheldon Brown as an amazing information resource for the bicycle community/cooperative/collective shop worlds.

Instead of hitting enter twice, you could also just click on the icon and that will inaugurate the search. Either works.
Yeah, I know [possibly most?] people these days search from their phones whose browsers only allow one search engine >_< . Or, if on desktop, they just use the default configuration option which is a single entry field that doubles as a search and URL bar. You only get the option to use, choose, or install multiple search engines if you explicitly set up the browser to show the separate built-in search bar (it's in the "Customize Toolbar" menu).
Anyway, it's really useful so I figured why not put it out there.
I'll try to add a link to the ThinkTank page in the wiki. It might be a good idea to add it to the ThinkTank archive page itself, where people will be landing if they are signing up for the list in the first place. Anybody managing HyperKitty that feels like doing that?
Now if only I can remember my login credentials...

I'm going to describe it in my own words in case it helps anyone else understand what's going on here. I am also on firefox.
- Click the linked page below. (Nothing happens. The instructions on
that page say basically the same thing I say below)
- While you're there at the linked page, click on your navigation
search bar drop-down menu
- At the bottom there's some icons for alternative search engines you
can use besides whatever your default search bar search is. If you ever use these or think you might, this is for you.
- click the one on the furthest right, it looks like an envelope with
a tiny green plus symbol on it.
How to use this new tool if you've never bothered with the little search icons in the bottom of the search menu:
type your search in your browser's navigation search bar as usual
tab over to your new envelope icon (if you hover over it, it says
ThinkTank archives)
- hit enter twice
Voila!

I updated the ThinkTank wiki page if anyone wants to check it out: https://bikecollectives.org/wiki/Thinktank
Whomever is in charge of the sign-up page might want to add a reference to searching (and the search plugin) in the Archives section of https://lists.bikecollectives.org/postorius/lists/thethinktank.lists.bikecol...
