Greeting from the Durham Bicycle Co-operative (Durham, NC, USA)
Dear fellow subscribers,
My name is Marcilla Smith, and I am the Communications Coordinator for the Durham Bicycle Co-operative. We are a 501(c)3 community bike project in Durham, NC, USA founded in 2007. I am writing today to make a first posting introduction, and to ask a question.
Earlier this month, the City of Durham agreed to lease our co-op some unused property from the city's parks department. Until this happened, I have been unaware of any bike co-ops that operate on government land. All others with which I am familiar either own the land or lease from a private owner. I am curious if anyone has any additional information about any other community bike projects with facilities on government property.

Marcilla,
Bikes for the World, based in Arlington, VA was leasing space from the City of Rockville, MD up until late last year when the barn they were using was condemned. We were starting discussions on sharing that space until that happened. I can put you in touch with Keith Oberg who can give you more details about the arrangement. Other than that, I know of three Rockville-based theater groups who lease space from the City for storage and construction space. Again, I can get contact information for you. Feel free to email me at swandruski@gmail.com

Hi Marcilla
The Iowa City Bike Library where I used to work operated in a surplus city owned building on a dollar a month lease for a few years. It was a great arrangement for the most part.

We currently lease our space from the City of SLO(Parking Division?). It is an office unit attached to the corner of a parking garage. Our Bike Kitchen program is in the front with an office unit in a back room.
See you in the bike lane,
Tyler Jamieson

I'm not based there, but I know Yellow Bike has an arrangement with the city of Austin, TX.

Positive Spin has a lease in a warehouse with BOPARC (Board Of Park And Recreation Commissioners) that is property of the City of Morgantown, WV. We pay a monthly agreed price + electricity + gas.
It is a 12,000 sq. ft. in size, lacks insulation so it limits our operations in colder weather, and it has leaks, but our landlord does spot fix it so that at least our public area stays mostly dry. Another issue is that we are on a 100-year flood plain so there are limits on how many improvements can be made to the facility. However, it is a great situation for us because the City is very supportive of our organization and the benefits to the community, we are located right by the rail trail, and we have significant storage space.
We have been very happy with our arrangement, but I highly recommend always to have a backup plan in place if you do rely on a lease, because you never know when you may suddenly have to move to a new location. At least have enough assets available to cover several months (6-12?) of associated costs, which may include covering a much higher lease in a new location.
