Research Assistance Request - Bikecollectives.org Think Tank
Hello Think Tank -
I am doing research on the use of bicycles, collectives, and group rides this semester at Tulane in New Orleans, the site of Bike!Bike! X.
To complete my project I am collecting information from websites and email requests. Some of you may have seen my message previously, sent from jstewar6@tulane.edu. I am aiming to create a geographic analysis map or two, not dissimilar to yours on Google, that also includes the date of the founding of the organization. I plan to use this location and date information for an analysis of the progression of US collective bicycle organizations with other spatial data. The information on bicycle collectives provided on your website is pretty extensive.
It has been suggested among the responses I have already received that you guys have a fairly current dataset and that it might be updated to included founding date of the organizations. Then, this might be shared with me for my use in this project.
I am writing to explore that option with you. Having put some effort into creating this and other data sets, I acknowledge that the data has some value. Perhaps we could negotiate a partnership. If you have some interest in the final analysis, I would be happy to share this, provided you would be willing to permit me to use the product of the data for my own presentations and products as a student as well.
Sincerely, Jordan

Hi Jordan,
I'm involved with an organization called Charlie's FreeWheels out of Toronto, Canada (charliesfreewheels.ca). We work with youth and began in 2009. Let me know if you require any other info for your research!

Hi Katherine-
Thank you for the assistance. Charlie's Free Wheels looks cool.
I am also interested in group bicycle rides and am looking for information on the development of this activity. For instance, it would be great to get a sense of when organizations themselves began organizing group rides (if so) and where these rides go - parks, beaches, historic sites...
Certainly, any information on community-supported bicycle-oriented organizations and group rides you think I ought to know is welcome.
Sincerely, Jordan

I need your help folks. Are there any bike collectives in Mississippi? Specifically Jackson? I didn't see any on bike!bike! But maybe there is a new start-up or something. A friend of mine wants me to ship him a bike to Mississippi from Hamilton, Ontario but I would much rather send him to someone locally. ThanksJeff Neven

Jeff,
My name is Melody Moody and I run the Jxn Community Bike Shop in Jackson, Mississippi. We are the only collective so far in the state. The reason you may not have seen us on bike!bike! or other places is because we are not yet open. We just got tools last week, are currently training volunteers and will open our doors in May. I can attempt to point your friend in the right direction. All of our local bike shops are supportive of our efforts, so if we can't help, we can get him in touch with some local shops if needed. Just make sure he knows we aren't quite open for services yet. Our bike collective is a project of Bike Walk Mississippi, our statewide bicycle advocacy group. I'm happy to answer any questions for you that I can. You can email me directly at bikewalk@bikewalkmississippi.org Thanks for thinking of us down here in Mississippi! Hope we can help.
Recycle Bikes for Kids is an unincorporated operation in Little Rock, Arkansas . Established in 2008, we repair donated bikes and give them away mainly to kids. To date we have given away nearly 5,000 bikes. It is strictly a volunteer operation. Check is out on facebook.

hi jordan, this is dave from The Bike Works in Silver City, New Mexico. our program grew from an after school riding program that was born around 1999. in 2005, we evolved the program into a community bike workshop with the establishment of a 3000 sq. ft. shop space. I was also around for the founding of The Yellow Bike Project in Austin, Texas. We were founded in 1996 with our first release of yellow bikes on jan. 25, 1997. Thanks for your work, Dave Baker
