Bike Collective Wiki is under attack and we need your help.
Rich Points at Community Cycles (Boulder, CO, USA) has complete control of the bikecollectives.org and bikebike.org domain names and hosting. However, the wiki has been under serious attacks from spammers ( http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Special:RecentChanges&am...), so he needs your help to come up with solutions. Specifically?
We need a MediaWiki security solution that still keeps the wiki easy to contribute, but keeps most of the spammers at bay and doesn't burn out the moderators. So far we have implemented ReCaptcha and email validation requirements on user creation, but it appears even those are being thwarted.
Sincerely,
Jonathan Morrison c: 801-688-0183
I recently posted a link to the wiki on a google map here http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=21564019... and to an awesome little online community here http://projects.metafilter.com/3097/Map-of-Community-Bike-Organizations
If either of those are causing problems, I could take them down. I'll forward your request to the folks who do LocalWiki and see if they have any suggestions.

Unfortunately, Captcha, or any similarly themed 'human check', breaks down when labor is so cheap in some parts of the world that it become economical to pay human beings to type in captchas all day. :(
We have this on our internal wiki:
==== What?! You don't have an account!? Don't worry! Any existing user can create an account for you. Just ask them to log in and fill out [[this user registration form]] for you. If you're shy, you can ask it@bicyclekitchen.com ====
This takes some of the burden off of the moderators, but might be prohibitively non-inclusive for the think tank.

http://www.allspammedup.com/2011/01/google-recaptcha-cracked/ I would suggest moving to a different type of captcha or another type of authentication altogether. Computers are getting smarter, any system will be cracked someday but Wikipedia is still using a basic captcha and doesn't seem to be having any major problems (at least that I've heard of). .g

It seems to me that we should start using a new-user registration process which requires bureaucrat approval. It'll still be some work for us admins, but definitely less than combatting the constant stream of spam. There's an extension at [1] which supports this.
The only downside to this approach is that it is prohibitive for the occasional new user who just wants to make a quick edit. Perhaps this can be used in conjunction with the extension at [2] to open up anonymous edits, but require them to be approved.
While we're talking about bikecollective.org changes, how about making the wiki the default landing page for the site? The most recent post is ~3 years old, and most of the links (directory, about, contact, bikebike) can be supported by the wiki. If this happens, maybe we can think about a logo on the wiki as well?
Best, D.

We should probably make sure all the spam for blow jobs and erectile drugs is resolved before we make it the front page... The only other consideration would be to make sure it is still easy for people to find and join the email list, which is fairly prominent on the front page now.

Here here. I would be really nice to have more than just the wiki there eventually but currently that's really the only thing offered and it seems outside most people's capacity for the time being to do much more with it. I'm not highly in favour of making registration to the wiki wait for moderators approval if there's a way to easily change the current captcha validation. You'll still have the major contributors joining up but I would be afraid that some of the smaller contributers just wouldn't bother. .g

Agreed -- I feel like 50% of our users log in once to say, change the hours for their co-op, and it would take too much effort for them to follow through on registration. Maybe this is where the "Approved Revs" extension could help us?

I wonder how complicated it would be if any user with more than X legitimate edits could approve a revision.
I emailed the folks from Local Wiki (thanks, Phillip!) and they suggested looking into Media Wiki's anti-spam measures. Apparently it is popular enough that people write bots for it.
The anti-spam page is here. http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Anti-spam_features The very first thing it says is that many of the anti-spam features aren't activated by default, so that's promising.

How about sign up for something called CloudFlare (http://www.cloudflare.com/)?
It is a content distribution network (CDN) designed to improve site up-time, reduce bandwidth and also stop spammers.
I think it works something like this: Spammers have certain network patterns. If other sites in the CDN identify those spammers, then their patterns can be recognized and other sites in the CDN will be protected. The service is free since everybody in the CDN benefits from more participants.
I have not used it, but it is worth looking into.

Hey All, First off let me apologize for letting this fall through the cracks, Jonathan came to me with this issue some time ago and I haven't made time to fulfill my commitment. I've done a tiny bit of work on this but got stuck on a few things at setup.
Anyway I just wrote tech support about the things I need to work through. But I hope to be ready to fully administer the site soon.
From what it sounds like in order to make the Wiki work we're going to have to put together a team of moderators to keep the spam out. If you're interested in being a moderator please get in touch with me off list.
I'll be in touch with more details soon.
Ride On! Rich
