Word of mouth is a budding non-profit (our bike coop) can become a 501-c-3 by "adoption" by another established 501-c-3.
Has anybody done this, can anyone give me the logistics or point me in the right direction? Thanks!
My teeny nonprofit has been enjoying tax deductible status by having another nonprofit as our statutory agent. Donations are made to the parent nonprofit, and passed through to the child nonprofit.

We (Velocipede bike project in Baltimore) are under the fiscal sponsorship with a baltimore-based group called Fusion (http://www.fusiongroup.org/) They basically handle tax deductible donations, as well as offer services such as grant writing, etc... for a yearly fee + a really small amount of percentage of donations. Basically it works exactly as you described. Its really nice if you can find an organization such as this in your neck of the woods.
We're definitely going ahead with applying for official 501c status, however... mostly because we are still being taxed for income, whether its selling used parts or accepting "donations"
