for anyone who's not familiar, Bicycle Times is a great magazine. i'm not connected with them, and have only seen a few issues so far, and I don't want to speak for them, but each one i've seen definitely leans more towards the utitlity/commuter type cycling than competitive/racing scenes that the newsstands are filled with.
i would definitely recommend you check them out.
i, for one, am very excited that someone from their magazine is asking about "us" on this list.
/endorsement.

Hello Everyone,
I am a freelance writer currently working with Bicycle Times Magazine ( http://www.bicycletimesmag.com/about_bicycleTimes) on an article featuring Community Bike shops. I thought I’d see if anyone here on thethinktank would have time to answer a few questions.
Here are some highlights covered in the article:
Define what makes a Community Bike shop
Look at the genesis of the Community Bike shop and its subsequent growth in cities around the world.
Discuss some of the challenges and rewards of running a shop and also look at how the presence of a local shop impacts the community beyond just the cyclist using the services.
If you are interested, reply to this email and I can send you the list of specific questions.
Thanks Everyone! Amanda

hello! My name is ryan jenkins and i represent the Troy Bike Rescue, in Troy NY.
Our website is here at www.troybikerescue.org and we would be willing to help you out in whatever way we can. We are definitely smaller than some of the much much bigger community bike shops but we have been in existence for 10 years now and have been a part of the "community" for some time.
cheers !

Hello Amanda Summit Cycling Center is community oriented, but we are organized as a cooperative. There is a small difference. However most of the objectives are the same. I would be happy to respond to your questionaire. Regards Angelo L. Coletta Mgr.

Canadian Cycling Magazine recently did a feature article on bike co-ops. They happened to highlight the New Hope Bike Co-op and 3 others from across Canada. Good article. Not sure if the article is online yet. http://cyclingmagazine.ca/current/

Amanda,
I have been working on the map at http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=21564019... a lot lately, and in doing so, I have visited a lot of websites. There is a list of more than a hundred community bike shops at http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Community_Bicycle_Organi... and you can follow any of the links to those organizations - most of them describe what they think their community bike shop is about somewhere in their website. Just thought I'd offer that as a more comprehensive resource than this straw poll, which probably also has a lot of thoughtful commentary.
At the top of the second link is the wiki's definition of what it means to be a community bike shop (anyone can edit!).
I'll happily answer your list of questions.
Angel
