Rachael, where can we get a list of those people?

Hi, all. I mainly wanted to respond to this item:
- Who else should be or wants to be involved in this project?
It seems like we have the necessary graphic art and programmers, who do we have that can start creating content? I think we should include all the folks who were at the table for the tech/national network conversations at bikebike. The one person who really comes to mind is Jessica from Free Ride (PGH), but I'm sure there were others. It would be nice to put a call out over the various mailing lists. I'd like to see a wider range of demographics among the tech/national network collective (and among collective bicycle culture in general, but that's a whole other matzah ball).
Also, there was some talk at bikebike about how to handle disaster relief. It doesn't seem like a critical component of this project just yet, but I don't want that thought to get lost.
In terms of content, I volunteered to start compiling documents, and possibly create a workbook/choose-your-own-adventure kind of thing (like.. if you chose to become a 501(c)3, go to page whatever; if you choose to have a paid staff, go to page whatever). I'll take anything: IRS paperwork, bylaws, mission statements, instructional materials, curricula, flyers, graphics, zines, press releases, media hits, etc.
Two wheels good, rachael

All,
For the sake of not getting derailed on domains lets concentrating on getting the content and features first. We can just use www.bikecollectiveS.org for the prototype and development and easily switch domains around when we are satisfied.
So to start...
- Who else should be or wants to be involved in this project?
It seems like we have the necessary graphic art and programmers, who do we have that can start creating content?
- What is this thing called?
I am a fan of self explanatory names that don't require any branding or explaining so my suggestion would be something like strong and simple like the "Bike Collective Network (BCN)"
- What is the mission statement?
We are all familiar with how this part works, so lets get a common goal in our minds. Here is my suggestion:
"The mission of the Bike Collective Network* is to improve and encourage communication between existing and future community bike shops. Collectively we can improve a bigger wheel as opposed to re-inventing smaller ones."
- What should the initial goals be?
Stepping back, as a potential user of the Bicycle Collective Network* the two main things I would expect to see are (1) other peoples documentation (volunteer manuals, shop rules, fundraising materials, marketing plans, etc.,...) and (2) An email list with a search able archive that key organizers from bike collectives converse on. Give that, here is my suggestions:
- Provide an interactive wiki-style central repository for bike
collective documentation.
- Provide Best Practices: The Do's and Don'ts of Bike Collectives.
- Provide document uploading and downloading services.
- Provide a interactive forum which could be just a email list with a
search-able archive.
- Provide a robust Bicycle Organization Organization Project (BOOP)
Directory and Map.
- Provide a bike collective "starter kit".
- Provide sub-domain websites for bike collectives without a web presense.
- Promote the annual Bike!Bike! conference.
- Have a small banner that other collective websites can use to link
to the Bicycle Collective Network*
Fun Things:
- What should the logo be?
I blatantly stole the "zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance" logo and put it on www.bikecollectiveS.org as an example. I am not a graphics guy, but something like this logo would be cool because it represents something organic and growing while blending something that represents us -- tools.

to all: all this sounds great. the only thing i would suggest is that we NOT do
a redirect,
( bikecollective.org > mkebikecollective.org) but rather use ian's suggestion of having a prominant link to help guide
people to the new MKE site... perhaps including a obvious note on the front page. this way, we don't have to wait 6 months to get something up for the bikecollective's new site, and it will be obvious enough about the changes and what this new web project is all about.
nic.

Domains
I like the mirroring idea. For the time being I would also recommend the following steps to make it less confusing for web users:
- Purchase the mkebikecollective.org domain name for $9 from godaddy
or some other registrar. 2) Make mkebikecollective.org the primary domain on the wild west domains account that Ian's dad Tom has set up. 3) Ask Wild West to redirect anyone that goes to bikecollective.org
to
mkebikecollective.org. 4) Wait a few months for everyone to get used to it and for it to register with search engines. 5) Finally redirect bikecollective.org to bikecollectives.org so they both point to the same place.
