Discounts/donations for accessories
Hey everyone,
We're involved in a couple programs that provide free/by donation bikes to folks that wouldn't otherwise have access and have recently identified a real need for accessories (particularly locks, but also helmets and lights). Has anyone had any success getting discounted or donated accessories from distributors, commercial shops (i.e. deadstock) or through fundraisers or bike drives?
Any tips/suggestion would be helpful :)
Thanks!

Helmets r us has been a good source for cheap helmets (rated helmets starting at $4 for non-profits). I've known of a few sources for free helmets in the past, but those I'm aware of have moved onto other health related causes.
Otherwise we use sunlite ulocks via JBI bike (aka j&b) which cost about $6.5 (up from 4.50 from our first big order). We've also gotten a ton of lights on their close out list which we provide if necessary. Their kidzamo line is a knockoff of knog's style and cost on front or rear lights is $3, as I recall.
Hope this helps someone, but would gladly have a different source for any of the above!

Aida, I might look into whether any bike rental companies around the city might be willing to donate you their used locks. There's a chance that they might budget to replace them every so often whether or not they've reached the end of their useful lives, in which case you could score some decent secondhand locks.

I suppose the same could apply for helmets too. All comes down to the fact that rental companies with shared fleets would probably want to refresh their inventory every so often.

Happy, Joyous and Freewheeling buys discounted helmets from Bell through their SafeKids program. The helmets are under $10. http://www.safekids.org/bell-sports

Our local Canadian Tire donated a bunch of lights and reflectors to us for a couple of program we ran two years ago. It ended up being a huge box of front and rear bike lights, some safety vests and reflective tapes. They also gave/heavily discounted a few helmets as well. Canadian Tire really seemed good about it and don't forget their Jump Start program which encourages kids to participate in sports.

I would never distribute used helmets! They're designed to be disposed of after they've been through a collision, and they're cheap enough that you can usually find someone to donate new ones for free (try your local hospital). Here's why to destroy donated helmets http://www.bhsi.org/yardsale.htm:
- Crash damage may not be visible. It may be crushed foam inside, or the
shell may pop back out and hide the cavity where the foam is crushed.
- The seller may have forgotten the crash, or been unaware that they
even hit their head. Or it may have occurred when the helmet was on somebody else's head.
- The standards sticker inside may be worn off or otherwise be
unreadable.
- If there is a pre-CPSC sticker for the ANSI, Snell or ASTM standard it
means the helmet was made before 1999. It may or may not meet the current standard, but you know for sure that it is old.
- There might possibly be head lice nits in the helmet from either the
former wearer or someone else who just tried the helmet on at the yard sale or thrift shop.

Has anyone tried approaching a local insurance company/office for a donation of cash for/actual helmets? Seems like they've got a bunch of money to spend and helmets/prevention is kind of in their wheelhouse.

We partnered with SA Bikes and the Department of Sustainability, they have helmets and lights that they have purchased to promote safety at events. They allow us to have helmets to give away at our program as long as they are branded and we provide information that relates to their program, wich is safety. I have no issue with that.
In short, try the city.
